Glazing Safety Regulations

glazing_safety_regulationsThere is much debate regarding the application of regulations and rules regarding the safety and manifestation of glass. We strongly believe that the regulations should be correctly and vigorously applied. However we also feel that these regulations should be used with as much common sense as possible.

Where at all possible and without obligation we will be pleased to visit and advise on the application of the regulations and any possible options available.

The legislation states that glass should be safe enough to prevent serious injury through human impact. The regulation is part of the Workplace (Health and Safety) Regulation (14) but this is not the limit of the requirements. BS6262 and building regulation approved document 'N' define the "critical areas" where safety inspections or investigations will focus.

Safety glazing film (or anti-fragmentation film) is a proven and very cost effective solution to replacing glass that falls below standard.

These critical areas are defined as being any glass that is within 300 mm of a door and below 1500 mm. Any window or partition that falls (in any part) below 800 mm of the finished floor level.

These cases must be compliant with the impact resistant requirements of BS6206 and be made apparent with a suitable manifestation. It is important that glass is checked even if it has only recently been installed or the building refurbished. Each pane of glass must be individually and permanently marked as being compliant with BS6206.
